Valve Standards Cross-Reference
Last updated: 2026-11
Valve specifications arrive in two vocabularies: the ASME/API system common in North American and hydrocarbon practice, and the EN/DIN/BS/ISO system common in European and water-infrastructure practice. This page cross-references the two — pressure classes, valve design and testing standards, and which valve type fits which duty — and links every row to the families we supply. Pairings here are nominal and duty-dependent: nothing on this page should be read as an unconditional swap, and the final check always happens at quotation against your governing specification.
1. Pressure class cross-reference — ANSI/ASME Class ↔ PN
ASME Class ratings are temperature-dependent pressure–temperature tables (ASME B16.34 for steel valves); PN ratings are nominal pressures under EN 1092-1 and related standards. The conversion below is the widely published nominal equivalence. Because ratings move with temperature and body material, two valves of "equivalent" class are interchangeable only after the pressure–temperature tables agree at your operating conditions.
| ASME / ANSI class | Nominal PN equivalence | Nominal pressure | What collected catalogues pair with it | Browse & quote |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class 150 | PN 20 (listed as PN 16 in many European lines) | ≈ 20 bar nominal | Collected listings pair Class 150 with PN16 (e.g. foot valves "PN16, Class 150"; concentric butterfly "85–232 psi / PN6–PN16"). | Ball valves · Butterfly valves · Foot valves · Quote this class |
| Class 300 | PN 50 | ≈ 50 bar nominal | Collected gate lines show variance: parallel gate "Class 300–4500 (PN25–PN760)" vs expanding gate "Class 300–2500 (PN40–PN420)" — the pairing is nominal, not exact. | Expanding gate valves · Parallel gate valves · Trunnion ball valves · Quote this class |
| Class 400 | PN 68 | ≈ 68 bar nominal | Thinly covered in collected lines; treated as a Class 600 down-step by most stock programmes — availability confirmed at quotation. | Gate valves · Quote this class |
| Class 600 | PN 110 | ≈ 110 bar nominal | Collected control-valve lines pair Class 150–600 with PN16–PN100, rounding PN100 under Class 600. | Ball valves · Pressure-seal gate valves · Angle control valves · Quote this class |
| Class 900 | PN 150 | ≈ 150 bar nominal | Covered above Class 600 in pressure-seal gate and forged lines — confirm per size at quotation. | Pressure-seal gate valves · Pressure-seal globe valves · Quote this class |
| Class 1500 | PN 260 | ≈ 260 bar nominal | Bellow-seal gate line: "ASME Class 150 to 1500 (PN16 to PN260)" — pairs 1500 with PN260 directly. | Bellow-seal gate valves · Forged-steel gate valves · Pressure-seal swing checks · Quote this class |
| Class 2500 | PN 420 | ≈ 420 bar nominal | Slab gate line: "ASME Class 150–2500 (PN16–PN420)"; plug lines pair Class 2500 with PN420 as well. | Slab gate valves · Trunnion ball valves · Lubricated plug valves · Quote this class |
Where a dimension of this table is not covered by published equivalence or a collected catalogue line — Class 400 stock availability, for example — the entry says so and is confirmed at quotation rather than filled in.
2. Standard correspondence — API / ASME ↔ ISO / EN / DIN / BS
The rows below group the valve standards buyers most often need to translate. The "where we supply it" column links to the families whose collected catalogue pages cite these standards.
| Group | ASME / API | ISO / EN / DIN / BS counterpart | Covers | Qualification | Where we supply it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gate — bolted bonnet, steel | API 600 | ISO 10434 · BS 1414 | Bolted-bonnet steel gate valves for petroleum, petrochemical and allied service. | Widely treated as covering the same valve family, but editions and supplementary requirements differ — specify the edition you need. | gate valve · wedge gate valve · Quote |
| Gate — compact forged | API 602 | BS 5352 | Compact forged-steel gate, globe and check valves, Class 800 and above. | Family-level correspondence; dimensional details should be confirmed per size. | forged steel gate valve · forged steel globe valve · pressure seal gate valve · Quote |
| Gate — water works | AWWA C500/C515 | DIN 3352 · BS 5163 · EN 1074 | Resilient- and metal-seated gate valves for water supply networks. | Different markets spec different face-to-face and coating requirements — confirm against the project specification. | rising stem gate valve · non rising stem gate valve · Quote |
| Ball — process | API 608 | ISO 17292 · BS 5351 · MSS SP-72 | Metal ball valves — floating and trunnion-mounted — for process piping. | Overlap is broad but not total; fire-safe and anti-static test clauses differ between editions. | ball valve · floating ball valve · trunnion mounted ball valve · Quote |
| Ball — pipeline | API 6D | ISO 14313 | Pipeline and piping valves — double block and bleed, through-conduit, full bore. | API 6D carries pipeline-specific requirements (double block and bleed, cavity relief) that API 608 valves do not automatically meet. | slab gate valve · double block and bleed ball valve · trunnion mounted ball valve · Quote |
| Globe — process | API 623 / BS 1873 | EN 13709 · DIN 3356 | Steel globe valves — bolted bonnet, welded bonnet and pressure seal. | BS 1873 and EN 13709 face-to-face tables differ in places; confirm the governing standard per line item. | globe valve · y type globe valve · Quote |
| Check — swing and lift | API 594 (dual plate) · BS 1868 (swing) | ISO 15761 · EN 12334 | Check valves — swing, lift, tilting disc and dual plate. | API 594 covers only dual-plate check valves; it is not a counterpart for swing designs. | check valve · swing check valve · dual plate check valve · tilting disc check valve · Quote |
| Butterfly | API 609 · MSS SP-67 | EN 593 · BS 5155 | Butterfly valves — concentric, double-offset and triple-offset. | Category A/B/C in API 609 and offset class in EN 593 must be matched to the duty, not assumed from the designation. | butterfly valve · wafer butterfly valve · triple offset butterfly valve · Quote |
| Plug | API 599 | BS 5353 · MSS SP-25 | Metal plug valves — lubricated, sleeved, jacketed and multi-port. | MSS SP-25 governs marking rather than design; check which one your specification calls up. | plug valve · lubricated plug valve · sleeved plug valve · Quote |
| Diaphragm | BS 5156 | EN 1092 flange drilling · DIN 3202 F4 face-to-face | Weir-type and full-bore diaphragm valves. | Diaphragm material standards are cited separately per elastomer — confirm the lining grade for your media. | diaphragm valve · weir type diaphragm valve · straight through diaphragm valve · Quote |
| Pressure relief | API 520 / 521 / 526 | ISO 4126 · ASME PTC 25 | Pressure-relief valve sizing, selection, installation and orifice designation. | API 526 orifice lettering and ISO 4126 flow areas are related but not identical — sizing must state the governing code. | safety valve · steam safety valve · Quote |
| Testing | API 598 | ISO 5208 · EN 12266-1 · DIN 3230 · MSS SP-61 | Valve inspection, pressure and seat-leakage testing. | Leakage-rate classes in ISO 5208 and API 598 are aligned but not interchangeable — name the class (e.g. ISO 5208 rate A) on the PO. | ball valve · gate valve · globe valve · check valve · Quote |

This is the most common cross-standard mismatch. | ball valve · butterfly valve · plug valve · Quote |
| Face-to-face | ASME B16.10 | ISO 5752 · EN 558-1 · DIN 3202 | Face-to-face and end-to-end dimensions of installed valves. | A retrofit into an existing line must match the installed face-to-face, not the equivalent class — measure before ordering. | gate valve · check valve · butterfly valve · Quote |

3. Valve type selection comparison
Class conversions only matter once the valve type is right for the duty. Quick comparison of the main families:
| Type | Motion | Primary duty | Sealing character | Collected pressure range | Browse & quote |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ball valves | Quarter-turn (90°) | Fast on/off isolation; full-bore versions give near-zero pressure drop. Not a throttle valve. | Soft seats (PTFE/PEEK) give tight shut-off; metal seats extend to high temperature and abrasive media. | ANSI Class 150 to Class 2500 | Catalog · Quote |
| Gate valves | Linear (multi-turn) | Full open / full closed isolation on lines that stay in one position; low flow resistance when open. Not for throttling. | Wedge or parallel gate against body seats; resilient seat for water works, metal seat for high temperature. | PN10 to PN450 · Class 150 to Class 2500 | Catalog · Quote |
| Globe valves | Linear (multi-turn) | Regulation and throttling — disc moves perpendicular to the seat, giving proportional control and repeatable seating. | Disc-on-seat line contact; bellow-seal variants for zero-fugitive-emission stems. | ANSI Class 150 to Class 2500 | Catalog · Quote |
| Check valves | Self-acting (flow driven) | Prevent reverse flow and protect pumps and lines — no operator, closes on flow reversal or spring. | Disc/plate against seat; selection turns on cracking pressure, slam behaviour and installation orientation. | ANSI Class 125 to Class 2500 (PN10 to PN420) | Catalog · Quote |
| Butterfly valves | Quarter-turn (90°) | Isolation and coarse throttling in large diameters at low weight and cost; offset designs extend to tight shut-off. | Elastomer liner (concentric) to metal-to-metal seat (triple-offset) as pressure and temperature rise. | PN10 to PN63, ANSI Class 150 to Class 1500 | Catalog · Quote |
| Diaphragm valves | Linear (multi-turn) | Corrosive, slurry and hygienic media — the diaphragm isolates the mechanism from the flow path entirely. | Weir-type for regulation and clean media; straight-through for slurry and viscous duty. | PN10/PN16 (DIN) · PN6 to PN16, Class 150 (ANSI) | Catalog · Quote |
Type selection boundaries are real: a ball valve is not a control valve, a gate valve should not throttle, and a check valve must match flow direction and slam tolerance. If your duty sits between two rows, describe the media and duty in the quote form and we will narrow it with you.
4. Frequently asked questions
Is ANSI Class 150 the same as PN16?
They are close but not identical. The nominal conversion lists Class 150 as PN20; European catalogues commonly list PN16 bodies under Class 150 because the working pressure of a PN16 flange at moderate temperature still exceeds what a Class 150 valve sees in the same service. Ratings in both systems are temperature-dependent (ASME B16.34 on the imperial side, EN 1092-1 on the metric side), so the safe rule is: treat the class pairing as a shortlist, then confirm the actual pressure–temperature rating for your medium and temperature at quotation.
Can I replace an API 600 gate valve with an ISO 10434 valve?
API 600 and ISO 10434 cover the same bolted-bonnet steel gate valve family, and many manufacturers build to both. But editions differ in supplementary requirements (stalk bearings, backseat, blank detail), and a project specification may call up one edition with addenda the other does not carry. Send us the specification clause and we will match a line that meets the governing edition rather than assume equivalence.
What do you need from me to quote valves against a cross-standard requirement?
Tell us: the governing standard and class (e.g. "API 600 Class 300" or "DIN 3352 F4 PN16"), size and count, body and trim material, end connection (flange drilling matters — ASME and EN flanges do not interchange), medium, temperature range and destination country. With that we can confirm availability, the matching edition and a price.
5. Request a quotation
