Wafer vs lug butterfly valve — which pattern do I need?
A wafer body is clamped between two flanges and is the lighter, cheaper pattern, but it cannot act as a line-stop: remove downstream flange bolts and the line loses its valve. A lug body has threaded lugs so each side can be disconnected independently — that is the pattern for dead-end service or maintenance isolation. Both share the same benchmark seat and operation options in SS316L execution; pick by installation need, not by price alone.
Which seat lining material should I choose?
The benchmark page lists EPDM, NBR, Viton and PTFE linings. EPDM is the default for water and steam-condensate service, NBR covers oils and hydrocarbons, Viton extends temperature and chemical resistance for aggressive media, and PTFE gives the widest chemical envelope at the cost of higher seating torque.
