SS316L Lug Butterfly Valves

SS316L lug butterfly valves are the threaded-lug execution of the butterfly family: each side of the body bolts to the flange independently, so the valve can isolate for maintenance or dead-end service — the capability the wafer pattern lacks. The collected benchmark page covers DN40 to DN300 at PN10 to PN40 and Class 150, to API 609 with SS316L among body options, PTFE bushings, elastomer or PTFE seats and lever, gear, electric or pneumatic operation.

Application & selection guidance

Specify the lug pattern where upstream or downstream piping must stay serviceable under valve isolation, or where dead-end duty applies. The benchmark range DN40 to DN300 is the common utility band — larger bores move to wafer or double-flanged executions on weight and cost. Seat selection (EPDM, NBR, PTFE) follows medium and temperature; the PTFE bushing and SS316L body option cover corrosive duty. Face-to-face follows API 609 / MSS SP-67-68, flanges per ASME B16.5 or DIN 2501.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a lug butterfly valve different from a wafer type?

Lug bodies carry threaded lugs that bolt each flange to the valve independently, so one side of the line can be dismantled while the valve stays in place and holds isolation. Wafer bodies are only clamped and do not provide that capability. The benchmark lug execution spans DN40 to DN300; above that range wafer and double-flanged bodies take over on weight and economy.

Is SS316L the right execution for my service?

The benchmark page lists SS316L among body options alongside carbon steel, cast iron and ductile iron. SS316L (low-carbon 316) is selected for corrosive media and for installations with field welding, where the low carbon avoids weld-zone sensitization. Combined with the elastomer and PTFE seat options listed, it covers chemical, seawater-adjacent and utility duty; match the seat to the medium explicitly.

What information is needed to quote an SS316L lug butterfly valve?

Provide nominal diameter (DN40 to DN300), pressure rating (PN10 to PN40 or Class 150), body and disc material, seat lining against the medium, operation (lever, gear, electric, pneumatic), and the mating flange standard (ASME B16.5 or DIN 2501 on the benchmark page). Add the medium and temperature so the seat and lining confirmation comes back with the quotation.

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Ask for the documentation set you need with the inquiry — typical items for this execution (material certificates, test reports to the listed inspection standard, dimensional drawings) are confirmed and supplied with the quotation.

Quotation

A quotation-ready inquiry states: nominal size and pressure rating, body and seat material preference, end connection, operation, and the service medium with temperature. Typical values on this page are benchmark reference ranges; the binding values are confirmed at quotation.

Sample & supply

Supply terms, order quantities and lead time are agreed per order — state the destination country and required schedule with the inquiry.

Storage & shipping

Store valves with seats and seals protected from UV, ozone and deformation, keep end-face protectors on until installation, and for elastomer- or PTFE-seated executions avoid prolonged outdoor storage — seat compounds age fastest in direct sunlight and freezing conditions.
