Knife Gate Valves · Purchase-decision comparison
Unidirectional vs bi-directional knife gate valves
Both executions are thin-blade knife gate isolation valves with face-to-face dimensioning commonly stated to MSS SP-81, for media a full-bore wedge would trap — the decision is whether your line has one fixed flow direction. (MSS SP-81-2021 itself covers stainless-steel, bonnetless, flanged-end executions; the governing design standard for each series is confirmed at RFQ.) This table compares the two executions we publish specification pages for, using only fields that mean the same thing and are collected on the same basis for both. Where a figure is not established by the collected evidence, the cell says so and asks you to confirm it at RFQ.

Comparison table
A row appears only where the field means the same thing and is collected on the same basis for both columns. A cell without collected evidence says "confirm at RFQ" — it is never filled with an assumption, and it never implies either execution cannot be supplied.
Quick decision
These conclusions apply to the two executions compared on this page — not to the knife gate valves family as a whole. Other executions of the same family differ, and any value marked "confirm at RFQ" is settled by the quotation, not by this table.
- Flow direction is fixed and known → unidirectional; the direction may reverse or was never fixed → bi-directional.
- Need dead-end service or maintenance with one side live → bi-directional; sizes above DN400 are covered only by unidirectional.
- Both use MSS SP-81 face-to-face dimensioning on wafer/lug bodies (governing design standard confirmed per series at RFQ) — the seat compound, size and pressure class are confirmed against your medium on the RFQ.
| Field | Unidirectional Knife Gate Valve | Bi-Directional Knife Gate Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Working principle | ||
| Sealing direction The defining difference of the comparison: which side of the blade the seal shuts off. | Seals on one side only — the thin blade seats into an elastomer seal sized for flow in one direction; install with flow against the sealed side | Seals in both flow directions — installs without regard to flow orientation |
| Seat design Only the bi-directional page tabulates the seat construction. | Unverified — confirm seat construction for your medium at RFQ Unverified — confirm at RFQ | Bi-directional resilient seated, perimeter seat design — bubble-tight shutoff in either direction, including dead-end service |
| Ratings & size | ||
| Size range | DN50 to DN450 | DN50 to DN400 |
| Pressure class The collected rating tabulation for both executions is internally inconsistent and could not be verified, so the field is downgraded pending confirmation (2026-10-31 audit V-P02). State your required rating on the RFQ and it is confirmed in the quotation. | Downgraded — the collected rating tabulation is unverifiable; confirm rating at RFQ Unverified — confirm at RFQ | Downgraded — the collected rating tabulation is unverifiable; confirm rating at RFQ Unverified — confirm at RFQ |

How to choose
Choose unidirectional when the flow direction is fixed and known
For one-direction isolation of pulps, sludges and dry solids the unidirectional execution is the standard choice, and its collected page extends to DN450 — 50 mm beyond the bi-directional range. The cost is discipline at installation: the valve must sit with flow against the sealed side, and the seal compound (polyurethane, EPDM, NBR or Viton) is chosen against the medium.
Choose bi-directional where orientation is a real constraint
Pump suction headers, manifolds and retrofits where flow direction may reverse or was never fixed are the stated use case for the bi-directional execution: bubble-tight shutoff in either direction, including dead-end service, with no installation-orientation constraint. The collected page also lists a wider actuation option set (gear, hydra-pneumatic). Its size band tops out at DN400.
End type is the second decision, inside either execution
Both executions come as wafer or lug. The maintenance trade-off is the same for both: wafer ends save weight but the line must be drained on both sides to remove the valve; lug ends let one side stay pressurised while the downstream spool is removed. Decide end type with the piping philosophy, not with the sealing direction.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install a unidirectional knife gate without checking flow direction?
No — orientation is the whole decision for the unidirectional execution. The blade seats into the elastomer seal on one side only, so the valve is installed with flow against the sealed side; the unsealed side does not shut off. If the line direction may reverse, was never fixed (retrofits, distribution headers, pump suction manifolds), or the valve must be reusable in either orientation, the bi-directional execution removes the constraint.
Is a bi-directional knife gate a drop-in upgrade everywhere a unidirectional one is specified?
Not automatically. The two overlap on wafer/lug ends, DN50–DN400 band, the same seal compounds and MSS SP-81 face-to-face dimensioning (the governing design standard is confirmed per series), but their size ranges are not identical (the unidirectional page extends to DN450) and the seat construction evidence differs between the two pages. Where a drawing names one execution, keep it; where the drawing allows an equivalent, confirm the substitution with the engineer of record and state it on the RFQ.
Why do some cells say "Unverified — confirm at RFQ" instead of a figure?
This page only states figures the collected evidence supports. Where a property is not tabulated for an execution — the seat construction of the unidirectional valve, for example — the cell is marked unverified rather than filled with an assumption. Attach your medium, size and pressure class to the RFQ and the figures are confirmed in the quotation.
