Requesting a Quote for Butterfly Valves

A butterfly-valve quotation turns on offset geometry, seat chemistry and the throttling duty: the offset count decides seat life and sealing, and a seat rating is not automatically the body rating. The parameters below are what a quotation-ready inquiry states up front.

Required inquiry parameters

An inquiry that states these values is quotation-ready — selection can start without a second round of questions.

ParameterWhy the quote needs it
MediumSeat choice is chemistry first — each seat family carries media exclusions.
Offset geometryConcentric, double offset and triple eccentric separate seat wear, temperature and tight-shutoff duty.
TemperatureSeat material windows and metal-seated executions track the service temperature.
Throttling dutyPartly-open operation brings cavitation, dynamic torque and actuator hunting — sizing uses Cv data.
Pressure classClass fixes the pressure boundary; the seat rating is not automatically the body rating.
ConnectionWafer, lug, double flanged or grooved ends must match the pipework and maintenance plan.

Standard ranges and custom options

Published reference ranges for this family, with the question to ask for each dimension when the requirement sits outside the span. Non-standard requirements are confirmed during quotation.

Dimension Published range If non-standard, specify
Size DN40 to DN2000 Face-to-face series per the project flange landscape
Pressure class PN10 to PN63, ANSI Class 150 to Class 1500 Class or PN rating, noting seat rating versus body rating under API 609
Materials WCB (ASTM A216), CF8, CF8M (ASTM A351), F316L (ASTM A182), F51/2205 duplex (ASTM A182), F53, F55/2507 super duplex (ASTM A182), C95400, C95800 aluminium bronze (ASTM B148) Carbon steel to super duplex and aluminium bronze for seawater duty
End connections Wafer, Lug, Flanged Wafer, lug, double flanged or grooved ends per the pipework
Seat construction Molded tongue-and-groove elastomer seat construction is used in hydronic resilient-seat executions: the molded profile lowers operating torque and provides bubble-tight shutoff. Seat material chemistry window for the medium — EPDM, NBR, PTFE or FKM each have exclusions
Seat leakage class Resilient seats can often achieve bubble-tight shutoff, typically equivalent to ANSI/FCI Class VI leakage performance; many metal-seated designs target lower leakage classifications such as Class IV. Leakage requirement the project specification demands
Design standards API 609, ASME B16.34, MSS SP-67 (where applicable), EN 593, BS 5155 API 609 category and testing standards the project requires

Drawings and documentation

What to attach to the inquiry — and what to ask for back with the order confirmation.

Line specification excerpt

Size, rating, body and seat materials, end connection and API 609 category.

Media chemistry

The medium decides the seat: EPDM fails on hydrocarbons, NBR not on ozone or hot water, PTFE nearly universal but cold-flow creep, FKM raises temperature with its own exclusions.

Duty split

Isolation or throttling — throttling duty must be sized as a control valve against Cv data.

Cycling and actuation

Cycling frequency, torque data and actuation supply for automated valves.

Documents to request with the order

General arrangement drawing, material certificates and test reports — availability confirmed with the quotation.

Lead time, MOQ and pricing

Supply terms are quoted per inquiry — size, class, materials and certification scope all move them, so they are confirmed rather than published as generic figures.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum information for a butterfly-valve quote?

Size, pressure class, end connection, media and temperature, seat material and leakage class, offset requirement and whether the duty is isolation or throttling. An inquiry carrying these moves directly to quotation.

Is the seat rating the same as the body rating?

No — a seat rating is not automatically the body rating under API 609. State the medium and temperature and the quote confirms both ratings explicitly.

How are lead time and MOQ handled?

Lead time and minimum order quantity depend on size, materials, seat configuration and actuation scope and are provided per inquiry — contact for confirmation rather than relying on a generic figure.

Ordering & documentation

Documents

Ask for the documentation set with the inquiry — typical items (material certificates, test reports to the listed inspection standard, dimensional drawings) are confirmed and supplied with the quotation.

Quotation

Send the medium, temperature, pressure, size and connection for a quotation-ready inquiry. Lead time, MOQ and price are confirmed at quotation, together with the documents to be supplied with the order.

Sample & supply

Supply terms, order quantities and lead time are agreed per order — state the destination country and required schedule with the inquiry.

Storage & shipping

Store valves with seats and seals protected from UV, ozone and deformation, and keep end-face protectors on until installation; storage limits and shipping arrangements for the selected materials are confirmed at quotation.
