What does the rising plug do that a conventional needle stem does not?
The plug lifts completely out of the bore, leaving a straight-through, bidirectional flow path - high capacity, low pressure drop, and a passage that can be rodded clean. A needle stem always partly obstructs the orifice. The back-seating stem tip additionally isolates the packing while the valve is open, so packing can be adjusted inline under pressure.
Which flow coefficients do the two orifice sizes give?
The benchmark page lists a 0.187 in orifice at a maximum Cv of 0.85 and a 0.250 in orifice at a maximum Cv of 1.65. Size the orifice from the required instrument bleed or gauge flow - the larger orifice doubles capacity but reduces control fineness.
